Wyngaard Kaas wins gold and silver again at Nantwich 2011

We are delighted to announce that our Oude Affiné Gember (Old Affiné with Ginger) has won a Gold Medal once again at the Nantwich International Cheese Show 2011. First prize was awarded in the Category ‘Single Cheese – Any variety with sweet Additives. Hard and Semi Hard Cheese.’  Our very special Wyngaard Chèvre Affiné artisan goat’s cheese won a Silver Medal in the category “the best hard pressed goat cheese”.

Here’s how the day unfolded yesterday. We got off to a good start with the doors opening to the Cheese Show at 9.00 am. We were expecting to be busy as yesterday was ‘Open to the Public’ day at the Nantwich Show.  We were not disappointed! As soon as the doors opened, lots and lots of people came into tent where the cheese contest took place, to see which cheeses were exhibited and which cheese won awards.  The public had the opportunity to visit the stands of the exhibitors and taste a huge variety of cheeses. There were fantastic cooking demonstrations with three well-known UK TV chefs, including Gino D’Acampo and James Martin.

Meanwhile, we are very busy at Wijngaard Kaas stand.  Although we only had a small stand, we are delighted that there were crowds of people lining up to taste our Reypenaer Aged Gouda Cheeses and our specialty cheeses with additives. During the course of the day, we received some wonderful compliments about our cheeses, such as “wow, this tastes fantastic”, “this is the best cheese I ever had” and “what a wonderful combination” not to mention “by far the best Dutch cheese I know”.

This was the first time that Wijngaard Kaas exhibited at the Nantwich International Cheese Show, although we have won awards practically every year since 2005. To experience these compliments directly from the visitors was making it a real sun shine day for us and, as you can imagine, it became even more perfect half way through the day when the prize winners were announced on the large stage.

In this year’s Nantwich Show, Wijngaard Kaas won a gold medal for our specialty cheese Oude Affiné Gember (Old Affiné with Ginger). This is the second year in a row we have won gold for this cheese in the category ‘Cheese with Sweet Additives’. We were very pleased with this result, but it just got better. Our Wyngaard Chèvre Affiné (4 months matured) goat’s cheese won the silver medal in the category “the best hard pressed goat cheese”.  Overall, there were hundreds of cheeses taking part of the competition over several categories. As all cheeses are tasted blind by expert judges at the Nantwich Show, it is very difficult indeed to become a prize winner.
