Wyngaard Kaas Truffle also impressed the jury and was awarded one star.
The Great Taste Awards are known as one of the most important culinary competitions in the world. The stars are awarded exclusively to products that truly excel in flavor, texture, and quality – tasted and judged by an independent panel of chefs, buyers, and taste experts.
From the jury report:
Reypenaer ⭐⭐
An orange coloured Gouda that is wonderfully creamy and firm, this cheese has a fabulous creamy mouth-feel with wonderful fruity nutty flavours that swirl around the mouth. The salt levels were really well-balanced. The flavour has good length and we all enjoyed tasting this cheese – very moreish.
This Gouda looks really attractive. It has a great colour and even, firm texture. The judges loved the creamy, salty and tangy flavour which was well-balanced and thoroughly enjoyable – a delicious and simple cheese.
This dark golden cheese has been well made and has a smooth consistent paste. We enjoyed the umami elements, the initial sweetness and the textural contrast with nascent crystals.
Reypenaer V.S.O.P. ⭐⭐
This is a great looking cheese - a lovely colour . The texture, appealingly crumbly, with plentiful salt crystals, is great and the taste, rich, powerful, long lasting, put this cheese in the moreish category. It manages to be crystalline and creamy at the same time.
With warm orange and caramel tones of colour, this is nutty and caramel on the nose, rich, creamy sweet and woody on the palate. It has great and even maturity throughout – mouth-filling and satisfying. The texture offers interest and nuggets of crystals which are wonderful as you let the cheese melt on your tongue.
This gouda has a buttery nose, and a sweetness and lovely nuttiness without being cloying. You can taste the dairy-ness of this cheese, butter and milk, along with a savoury note that just balances it – a really well-produced cheese with a delightful long finish.
Wyngaard Kaas Truffel ⭐
Lovers of truffles will adore this cheese, while those not so keen on them may find it a bit overpowering. The intense, truffle-rich aroma of this cheese is full of promise. It has a visible rind and a slick black covering of the truffle. The cheese is creamy and would be delicious on its own. The creaminess marries with the intense mushroom flavour of the truffle. This is a combination that some would love while others would find it overwhelming. In the right hands, such as a delicatessen that would guide the buyer, this cheese would find its true following.
This cheese looks to have been generously topped with a very aromatic truffle tapenade. The truffle element is dominating with notes of mushroom, earth and wood. There were enticing wafts on the nose and the cheese was wonderfully creamy but the truffle dominated. There was a good umami finish that coated the palate and lingered. The cheese was beautifully creamy and melted in the mouth.
